Murray State University

This Murray State University graph was requested by a proud grandma of a student planning attendance in the fall. L.A. Kings graph

Yesterday I stated "excitement" as one of the reasons we watch sports.  In my opinion, there is no more exciting sport than hockey!  Speed, adrenaline, fights, scores, penalties, blood...and it's all done on ice!  As a rather clumsy person who occasionally trips over nothing and runs into walls while turning a corner (I've even kicked my own leg out from under myself while standing up from the couch!), this seriously impresses me! Well, I could do without the blood and the fights, to be honest, but it does add to the excitement, I must admit.

I was asked to do this L.A. Kings graph and cringed when I saw the logo.  A crown?  A fancy crown?  I tried everything I could, including making the whole graph the crown.  I made the graph larger and thought if a single crochet stitch was used to get the right size...no.  Too much detail.  So I drew it in pixel by pixel and tried for hours to get it to look like a crown that a child didn't draw.  I'm not sure I succeeded but she says she likes it so here it is!  If you have any suggestions on making it better, please let me know!

NASCAR graph

What is it about stock car racing that gets the fans so hyped up?  Is it the speed?  The drama?  The crashes? Or is just a great way to kill a Sunday afternoon and a beer?  People who are not fans say the same thing: "mind-numbingly repetitive." People who aren't fans of basketball, baseball, and football say the same things about those sports. 

True fans of any sport say the excitement, the adrenaline, and watching their favorite member do something spectacular is why they keep coming back for more.

Use an H sized crochet hook and 2 dc per graph square on this NASCAR fan graph to get a twin-mattress-top sized afghan throw to curl up under during the races with your favorite beverage and snacks. I'd suggest working it from the short side and using a different skein for each color change to keep the colors from showing through.  If you are feeling a bit intimidated by the checks, leave them  out!  This afghan would look great with a solid top and bottom in either black or white.

San Francisco 49ers

The San Francisco 49ers is one of the few teams who haven't drastically changed their logo in decades.  It started out in 1946 as this guy here:

Can you imagine trying to crochet this guy?  Whoo!  I like the one they chose and varied very slightly from 1968. Much clearer and easier to make.  A simple Scarlett oval with intertwined white SF and black and gold outline.

Green Bay Packers version 2

I've had a lot of interest on my Green Bay Packers graph found here but one customer wated to try something different after she had tackled and conquered that pattern.  This was the idea she had and this was how it turned out.  Use an H hook and 2 dc per graph square to get a twin-mattress top sized throw (without border) or increase the rows by 15 on each side and 5 on top and bottom to crochet with a J hook order to get a 4 x 5 ft throw.  If you'd like the pdf version on this graph, email me at kendrascrochet@gmail.com with "Green bay version 2" in the subject line.  I'd suggest working this pattern from the short side because it has text in it and it will cut down on the color changes and save time and frustration!  Let me know if you like it in the comments below, or you're welcome to use the share buttons below this post, but please credit me with the design.

Seattle Seahawks

The Seattle Seahawks are an NFL team with Blitz the Seahawk as part of the team's logo. He enjoys rousing up crowds and daredevil stunts.  His sidekick, Boom, doesn't feature in this graph.

I created this graph for a fan who decided at the last minute she wanted something different so I never got the chance to make it.  It's for a smaller throw that my usual mattress-top sized afghans but having not made it, I can't be specific.  Use an H hook and 2 dc per graph square to get a decent size throw.  Try chaining the length and see if it's big enough for your taste, then add stitches to each end as necessary to make it the size you prefer.  If you would like the pdf of this graph, please email me at kendrascrochet@gmail.com with "Seattle Seahawks" in the subject line.

New Orleans Saints

Fleur de Lis, plain

I made a few different versions of the New Orleans' Saints Fleur de Lis before I and my correspondent, who was desperate to make one, were happy with it.  The first was a black background with a gold Fleur de Lis. Very simple, very understated, very "elegant" was my thought.  "Lone tumbleweed in the desert" was hers.  Plus, a black background was difficult for anyone to see the grid lines on. Change that to gold.

"Add some text" was her next thought.  So I put in the word "Saints" above (and another version with the text  below, but I didn't want to overwhelm you with too many photos-I think maybe she liked the text below better)!  "Better," she told me.  But still too plain.  What to do next?  She sent me a picture.  A large, black Fleur de Lis behind an upright, smaller, gold one with large lettering of "SAINTS" above and in the foreground.  "That's going to take some time," I told her.  She was excited at the prospect of it working and was willing to wait.  Within a few days I sent her this:

Guess what?  She loved it!  I do too, but I think it would be a bit complicated to work up. So very many color changes and you know what that means!  Every opportunity for knots to invade our personal space and destroy what we've worked so hard to accomplish.  That's why I say to work it from the side - to cut down on the color changes all happening in the same rows.

Baltimore Orioles

Baltimore Ravens graph

Poe, the official mascot of the Baltimore Ravens, looks pretty fierce in this graph of the NFL team's logo.  When not cheering on his favorite team in purple, Poe enjoys hugging children in hospitals, visiting birthday parties, and bringing fun to area schools!  Get him on the home field, though, and he'll tell you to "play like a raven!"

Crochet this afghan using an H hook and 2 dc per graph square to get a twin-mattress-top sized throw.  To make it a bedspread, add several rows of dc border in the colors used in the main part of the blanket. Oakland Raiders

This NFL team hails from California and has a rather fiddly design in the middle (look at the detail in the face!) so I'd recommend starting from the long side when you crochet this one.  Use a J hook and 1 sc per graph square to get a small throw, or use an H hook and 2 dc per graph square to get a twin size bedspread. Nebraska Cornhuskers

This college football team graph is very simple. Other versions I've seen wouldn't translate quite as well to graph squares so I chose just the Nebraska N to represent this team.  Using 2 dc per graph square and an H hook, you should get an afghan the size of a twin mattress top, larger if you decide to put a dc border around it. To make a 4 x 5 ft throw, use a J hook, 1 sc per graph square, and increase the rows by 5 on each side and 15 on top and bottom. Michigan Wolverines

The University of Michigan has a special place in my heart.  Michigan is my home state, I have a cousin in attendance at U of M, and my brother got his kidney/pancreas transplant at the hospital there, which U.S. News and World and Report ranks at number one in Michigan, and number 6 nationally! Go Blue!

This graph is 90 by 120 squares, which, when using an H hook and 2 dc per graph square, will give you a twin-mattress-top-sized throw. Due to the nature of the logo in the middle, it will be finicky to crochet from the short side, so I'd suggest working it from the long side instead to avoid the inevitable tangles occurring in the middle. Iowa Hawkeyes

Herky the Hawk is the University of Iowa's mascot.  Crochet this college football team's logo in black and white as shown or choose the school colors of  black and gold. Using 2 dc per graph square with an H hook will give you a throw about the size of a twin mattress top. Please put any comments or questions in the body of the email.  

If you are nervous about the lettering, I'd suggest either working the blanket from the short side (this seriously cuts down on color changes!) or leaving out the lettering if you want only the logo.  If you leave out the lettering, request the top graph so your logo will be in the center. I use a method called "intarsia" to keep the colors from showing through between sections.  See this blog post to read about how I do this (includes photos).

Denver Broncos

The Denver Broncos are another NFL team whose logo I love!  What a gorgeous animal!  This graph is made to create an afghan about twin mattress top sized when using an H hook and 2 dc per graph square. If you'd like a 4 x 5 foot throw, add 15 rows to each side and 5 to the top and bottom.  use a J hook and 1 sc per graph square. There is no pesky text on this graph, but if you'd like me to add it, please ask!

Dallas Cowboys graph.  Using 2 dc per graph square with an H hook give you a large throw, about twin mattress top sized. St. Louis Cardinals

Not to be confused with the NFL team Arizona Cardinals found here,  the St. Louis Cardinals are a Major League Baseball team (as you can figure out from the bat in the graph).  This graph is created to make a twin mattress top sized throw when using an H hook and 2 dc per graph square.  If you want a 4 x 5 ft throw instead, Add 15 rows to each side and 5 rows to top and bottom, then crochet using a J hook and 1 sc per graph square.  I'd recommend starting from the short side as the lettering is a bit involved if you try to do across those rows. Cleveland Browns

Another NFL team graph for today!  I adore the expression on the Cleveland Browns' logo!  When using an H hook and 2 dc per graph square, you should get a twin sized afghan, for overhang, put a few rows of dc border around the edges.  For a throw size, add 15 rows to each side and use a J hook with 1 sc per graph square.  I'd suggest working it from the short side so you do't have to keep changing colors in the lettering. Carolina Panthers

Carolina Panthers is a graph without text, but with what I consider a dynamic photo!  What a stunning logo for a team!  This graph was created to make a twin mattress-top sized throw, easily converted to  a bedspread (by adding several rows of border) or enlarged for a full sized bed (by adding 15 rows to the top and bottom of the logo to make the graph a square).  Use an H hook and 2 dc per graph square to gt these sizes. Chicago Bears

One of my dad's favorite teams is the Chicago Bears. I made this with him in mind and look forward to actually using the graph to make the afghan!  If anyone has made it, please send me a photo and maybe I'll feature it here.  To make this graph, use 2 dc per graph square with an H hook to get a twin mattress sized throw.  Add a few rows of border to make a bedspread for the twin mattress.  If you want a 4 x 5 ft throw, add 2 rows on each side and 15 rows to the top and bottom, keeping to the color pattern.  Use 1 sc per graph square and an J hook.  I have fixed the email problem so I will get notifications if you leave comments.  I would suggest starting at the long side to avoid a lot of color changes happening at the same time.  To get started, count the number of stitches along the edge were you'll begin.  Double that number and add 1 more.  Start your dc in the 3rd ch from the hook. Each row of crochet is 1 row of graph squares.

Auburn University graph

I don't get a lot of University graph requests, but this is one that I did get.  Auburn University, the Auburn Tigers!  I did not make a tiger face, but I could try it, if you need me to.  This graph is made to create a twin mattress sized afghan without a border, larger if you put one on.  Use 2 dc per graph square with an H hook to get this size.  If you want a smaller throw, then add 15 rows to each side of the logo and 12 to the top and bottom and use a J hook with 1 sc per graph square.  Sounds weird, doesn't it?  A bigger graph to make a smaller blanket?  But yes, it works, bcause you are using 1 sc per graph square instead of 2 dc.  If you'd like this graph, please go to kendrascrochetedcreations.com.  Hope you enjoy the rest of your day!

If you use an H hook and 2 dc per graph square with a WW yarn like Red Heart, this will come out j u s t about twin mattress top sized.  If you want larger, you can add several rows of dc border around it, or use a larger hook (but I don't know how big it will turn out if you do!).  If you complete this, I'd love to see a photo of the finished product!  I haven't made this myself so I can't share information about yarn amounts.  I wold make one suggestion: that you work it from the short side.  That way all those color changes in the middle will not happen all at once.  That's very frustrating to work through.  It won't change the size of your finished product. Oh, and do NOT double the rows, just 2 dc per graph square will do it!  I hope you enjoy!
